Light that connects
the world and
co-creates the future

Our mission is to maximize the utilization of the "3GeV Synchrotron Radiation Facility (NanoTerasu)", located on our Aobayama Campus, to pioneer the future of science and technology in Japan. By leveraging our global network and promoting innovative co-creation activities in strong collaboration with domestic and international research institutions and industry, we aim to create unprecedented new knowledge. We will then rapidly implement these achievements into society, bringing new value to industries.
Furthermore, by establishing a robust research complex centered around NanoTerasu and expanding research frontiers, we will dramatically enhance the research capabilities of our university. Through these efforts, we will elevate Japan's scientific and technological standards to the world's highest level and strongly drive sustainable innovation.
Director of Organization for NanoTerasu Co-Creation Promotion
Executive Vice President, Tohoku University

This organization was established to promote the strategic use of "3GeV Synchrotron Radiation Facility (NanoTerasu)," a world-class cutting-edge large-scale research facility, and to maximize its infinite potential. NanoTerasu will be the core of co-creation activities through collaboration with domestic and international research institutions and industry, powerfully driving the creation of new knowledge and its groundbreaking industrialization. By forming a research complex centered around NanoTerasu, we aim to dramatically strengthen Tohoku University's research capabilities, thereby making significant contributions to the advancement of Japan's scientific and technological standards and the creation of innovation.
In 2019, Tohoku University hosted the "AOBA SUMMIT", the world's first gathering of representatives from major synchrotron radiation facilities worldwide. Since then, we have continued to hold this summit, establishing a strong collaborative network with domestic and international research institutions.
The "Global Coalition Institute", established within this organization, will utilize Tohoku University's existing international network with major overseas synchrotron radiation facilities to invite outstanding researchers from around the world, promoting global talent circulation and the formation of co-creation hubs. Additionally, by organically collaborating with the " International Center for Synchrotron Radiation Innovation Smart" and the "Research Center for Green X-Tech", and establishing an "under one roof" organizational structure, we will strategically and dynamically further promote international co-creation and industry-academia collaboration centered around NanoTerasu.
We have established the "Global Coalition Institute" as an operational organization, and the " International Center for Synchrotron Radiation Innovation Smart " and the " Research Center for Green X-Tech" as partner organizations. Under this "under one roof" structure, we will strategically and agilely further promote the NanoTerasu project.
We will maximize the utilization of Tohoku University's global network to strongly promote strategic international collaboration. Specifically, we will invite global renowned researchers and companies to form secure global coalition teams within a high-security R&D environment. The Director and PIs provide direction for the Value Champion strategy and co-creation network, aiming for high-impact research papers and new technologies through global coalition matching. We will actively utilize cross-appointments with universities, synchrotron radiation facilities, industries, and academic institutions to connect outstanding researchers and accelerate joint research.
