【Event Report】 International Science Advisory Committee Held by the Organization for NanoTerasu Co-Creation Promotion

On January 19, 2026, the Organization for NanoTerasu Co-Creation Promotion held the International Science Advisory Committee (ISAC) at the Westin Hotel Sendai and Tohoku University's Katahira Campus. Following the transition of the 3GeV High-Brilliance Synchrotron Radiation Facility "NanoTerasu" from its construction and commissioning phase to a full-scale operational phase, this committee was convened to receive evaluation and advice from world-class experts regarding the Organization's strategic operational guidelines and future vision.

The meeting was attended by nine committee members, including the Chair, Dr. Stephen Streiffer (Director of Oak Ridge National Laboratory), as well as directors of major synchrotron radiation facilities from Europe, the U.S., and Asia, and representatives from industry. The session began with a keynote report by Vice Director Masaki Takata, followed by an overview presentation by Director Hiroo Yugami. Subsequently, the directors of the Organization's three constituent centers—the International Center for Synchrotron Radiation Innovation Smart, the Research Center for Green X-Tech, and the Global Coalition Institute — reported on their latest technological development achievements, digital strategies, and the newly proposed bio-strategy based on medical-engineering collaboration.

During the committee discussions, high praise was given for the achievement of constructing and commissioning NanoTerasu on schedule and according to specifications. At the same time, strategic recommendations for future development were presented, including shifting engagement with participating companies from quantity to quality, strengthening collaboration among academia, transitioning to autonomous research and development utilizing AI, and promoting substantive global human resource circulation.

To conclude the meeting, the committee members submitted and reported on the Evaluation Report to President Teiji Tominaga of Tohoku University. The Organization takes the international perspectives and recommendations obtained from this committee seriously and is committed to accelerating the construction of an "Innovation Ecosystem" through co-creation among industry, academia, government, and finance, thereby contributing to the advancement of science and technology and the resolution of social issues.
